Twelve castles in England and Scotland you can actually sleep in
Britain has thousands of castles and lets you walk through most of them between ten and five. These twelve give you the key, the dinner and the morning after — six in England, six in Scotland, all open and taking bookings for two nights or more.
They’re ordered by price, and the first three come in under $250 a night. This is not the luxury-only list people expect.
If any of these castles interest you, the agents at InterlineTravel.com can get you booked not only at the castle (assuming it has availability) but also your rental car and a complete custom tour of England and Scotland. Just call them at 800 766-2911 or email stevec@dynamictravel.com.

-
Lumley CastleOver 600 years old · parkland above the River Wear
A genuine 14th-century castle sitting between Durham and Newcastle, overlooking the county cricket ground, with the Black Knight restaurant inside and a long-running reputation for being haunted that the hotel does nothing to discourage.
The cheapest real castle night in Britain by a distance, and dinner-inclusive packages start around £190 per room — often less than the room alone elsewhere on this list.
-
Peckforton CastleBuilt 1840s for Lord Tollemache · Grade I listed · 48 rooms
Described as the only intact medieval-style castle in the country, rising above the Cheshire plain behind a portcullis entrance. Two restaurants — the 3-AA-Rosette 1851 and a brasserie in the old scullery, complete with the original 1840s cast-iron ranges. The Sandstone Trail starts at the door and Chester is 20 minutes.
Rooms are characterful rather than uniform: creaking floorboards, odd shapes, thick walls. That’s the point, but set expectations with clients who want a standardised five-star box.
-
Langley CastleBuilt 1350, reign of Edward III · seven-foot walls · 10 acres
One of very few genuine medieval fortified castles in England operating as a hotel. Four-poster beds, window seats cut into the stone, a 2-AA-Rosette restaurant, daily tours of the battlements, and Hadrian’s Wall five miles away.
Only nine of the bedrooms are inside the castle itself — the rest are in Castle View and the lodge, 80 and 180 metres away. Book the castle rooms or the trip loses its point.
-
Dalhousie Castle13th century · reputedly Scotland’s oldest inhabited castle · 35 rooms
Wooded parkland on the banks of the River Esk, eight miles from the centre of Edinburgh. Spa, two restaurants — one of them in the old dungeon — and falconry on the estate. Cromwell’s Parliamentarians used it in 1648 and Queen Victoria took tea here in 1840.
The best-value castle base for an Edinburgh trip: close enough for the city, far enough to feel like a break. It closes for winter refurbishment most years — one listing shows 6 January to 31 March, dates subject to change, so confirm before quoting.
-
Hever CastleAnne Boleyn’s childhood home · 13th-century double-moated castle · 26 rooms
You sleep in the Edwardian Astor and Anne Boleyn wings, built in Tudor style and gated off from the day visitors. Admission to the castle and 125 acres of gardens is included with every stay, and guests have the gardens outside public hours. In January, when the castle is closed to the public, guests get a private guided tour.
The most history per night on this list. Rooms run from around £130 in low season to about £404 for the Edward VI suite with castle views — a wide spread on one property, so the room choice is the booking.
-
Dornoch Castle Hotel15th-century bishop’s palace · 21 rooms, 9 inside the castle · family-run
Directly opposite the 13th-century cathedral in the middle of Dornoch, with a walled garden, a restaurant built on local produce, and one of the best whisky bars in the world — old and rare bottlings, single casks, and the family’s own Dornoch Distillery gin and whisky.
The pick for whisky and golf clients: Royal Dornoch is walkable, Glenmorangie is close, and the NC500 runs past the door. Insist on one of the nine castle rooms — the other twelve are in a modern extension.
-
Thornbury CastleThe only Tudor castle in England run as a hotel · Relais & Châteaux
Five hundred years of history, oriel windows, a Tudor hall, roaring fires, suits of armour and a 3-AA-Rosette restaurant. Archery and croquet on the grounds; falconry and clay shooting by arrangement. Bedchambers reached by spiral staircases up the tower.
You can book the chamber Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn shared. Good Cotswolds and Welsh border base. The castle closes briefly in mid-January.
-
Crossbasket CastleRestored 17th-century tower house · 14 acres · Small Luxury Hotels
Canopied beds, antiques, suites up to 645 square feet, and three private lodges in the grounds, with woodland, a river and waterfalls on the estate. Dining is overseen by the Roux family, which is the reason most people book.
The pick when the food has to match the building. Nine and a half miles from Glasgow, so it also works as a civilised alternative to a city-centre hotel.
-
Amberley Castle900 years old · 19 rooms · 60-foot curtain walls, moat and portcullis
A working portcullis, a resident peacock, tennis courts, an 18-hole putting green and a croquet lawn, at the foot of the South Downs. Rooms are split between the castle and two 17th-century stone buildings.
The easiest true fortress to bolt onto a London trip. Arundel and its castle are four miles away, so a two-night stay covers both.
-
The Eisenhower at Culzean CastleSix bedrooms on the top floor of Robert Adam’s clifftop castle · 600 acres
When the Kennedy family gave Culzean to the National Trust for Scotland in 1945, they attached one condition: the top floor was to be offered to Eisenhower for his wartime service. He used it four times, once as President. Guests reach it by the original 1920s lift and get a circular drawing room, a dining room and panoramic views over the Firth of Clyde to Arran.
Nothing else on any of our lists has this pedigree at this price. Six rooms only, and the estate empties of day visitors in the evening. Packages including breakfast, cream tea and a castle tour surface around £189.
-
Inverlochy CastleBuilt in the 1860s · five stars · under Ben Nevis
Queen Victoria wrote after her stay that she had never seen a lovelier or more romantic spot, and Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip came later. Loch, mountains, tennis courts and a snooker room; Glencoe is 30 minutes and Fort William three miles.
The Highland anchor. Best combined with Skye or the Great Glen rather than treated as a single overnight — the setting is the reason to come.
-
Glenapp CastleScottish baronial, 1870 · 36 acres of gardens and woodland · Relais & Châteaux
Oak-panelled halls, drawing rooms with open fires, sea views to the volcanic plug of Ailsa Craig, and a Gertrude Jekyll Italian garden. The castle runs its own boat, taking guests to islands, distilleries and archaeological sites along the coast.
Watch the three-nights-for-two offers, which have run at about £277 per room per night — that brings a five-star castle under $400 a night. Galloway Forest Park, one of Europe’s great dark-sky sites, is 35 minutes away.
Book the building, not the postcode
The same trap runs through this list. Langley has nine bedrooms inside the castle and the rest in the grounds. Dornoch has nine in the castle and twelve in a modern extension. Crossbasket has lodges; Culzean has six rooms and no more. The rate an online engine hands you is very often the one that isn’t in the castle at all — and at Dalhousie and Thornbury there are winter closures that don’t always show up before you’ve paid.
We hold the direct relationships, we know which room number puts you behind the old walls, and through our consortia we can often add breakfast, a dinner credit or an upgrade at no extra cost. Tell us your dates and how many nights you want inside.
