You have your cruise booked or maybe that trip to a tropical island for a week on the beach. Then you turn on the news to find out a hurricane is headed for your destination.
Or worse, you are at the destination only to learn the hurricane took a left and is going to hit your island in the next 48 hours!
Getting off the island is going to be difficult if you are there. If you are going and now want to cancel, the hotel is going to charge you a cancel fee since they don’t think it’s any big deal or might miss them entirely.
So you think, well I will just go buy some travel insurance and that will cover me…….
NOT!!!!
Since the hurricane has been named and is tracking, the storm will be considered a preexisting condition for which the travel insurance will not cover. Basically you waited too late.
If it is hurricane season, which runs June 1 to Oct. 31, then take out the travel insurance when you book, before there is any sign of a hurricane. Then if one develops that changes or cancels your plans, the insurance will then help cover your cancellation costs and your other out of pocket costs.
So the word to the wise is, don’t wait to buy travel insurance. Buy it when you book. Otherwise by the time you realize you need it later, it will be too late to buy it.
